Tour of the example project
This tour walks through an invented bid set, one step at a time. Each step shows what the index holds and where each number comes from.
This tour is a demonstration with fictional data. The app itself is not live yet. Anything described for your own files is marked planned.
Example project (fictional)
- The example has 3 files: a project manual and two issues of the drawings. Together they hold 53 pages.
- The tour shows what the documents say. It does not say what they mean.
- It gives no speed figures and no success rates.
Step 1: The coverage line
The example search shows a coverage line with its results. This is the line it shows for the example project.
Searched 50 of 53 pages. 3 pages not searched (scanned page, no text layer): Section 07 92 00, page 3; Sheet S-201; Sheet S-501.
What the line says
- Searched 50 of 53 pages. Those 50 pages have a text layer. A search reads them.
- 3 pages not searched. These pages are scanned pictures with no text layer. A search cannot read them.
- The addresses. Each page that was not searched is named by its address: one section page and two sheets.
Where the 53 pages come from
The project manual has 37 pages. Issue 1 of the drawings has 15 pages and Issue 2 has 1 page. Together that makes 53 pages.
Why the line is there
A search that finds nothing tells you only about the pages it could read. The coverage line keeps the other pages in view, next to the results.
It does not say what the 3 pages contain, because the search cannot read them. The example Index Report lists the same 3 pages under "What we could not read". Try the example search to see both.
A coverage line for your own files is planned.
Step 2: Specs by division
The project manual is grouped by division. A division number is the first two digits of a section number. The list shows numbers only, with no titles added.
13 divisions, 18 sections, 37 pages.
| Division | Section | Pages in section | Pages in the file |
|---|---|---|---|
| 00 | 00 21 00 | 2 | 1 to 2 |
| 01 | 01 10 00 | 1 | 3 |
| 01 33 00 | 3 | 4 to 6 | |
| 01 73 00 | 2 | 7 to 8 | |
| 03 | 03 30 00 | 2 | 9 to 10 |
| 04 | 04 20 00 | 2 | 11 to 12 |
| 06 | 06 10 00 | 1 | 13 |
| 07 | 07 21 00 | 2 | 14 to 15 |
| 07 92 00 | 3 (page 3 not searched) | 16 to 18 | |
| 08 | 08 11 00 | 2 | 19 to 20 |
| 08 71 00 | 2 | 21 to 22 | |
| 09 | 09 29 00 | 3 | 23 to 25 |
| 09 91 23 | 3 | 26 to 28 | |
| 10 | 10 44 00 | 1 | 29 |
| 21 | 21 13 00 | 2 | 30 to 31 |
| 22 | 22 40 00 | 2 | 32 to 33 |
| 26 | 26 51 00 | 2 | 34 to 35 |
| 32 | 32 13 00 | 2 | 36 to 37 |
How to read the list
- A section address reads "Section 09 91 23, page 2". The page is counted from where the section starts. It is not read from a printed page number.
- The last column gives the page in the file, as a second way to find the same page.
- Section 07 92 00 has 3 pages. Its third page is the scanned page named in step 1.
Sections found in your own files, listed this way, are planned.
Step 3: Drawings by discipline
Sheets are grouped by the first letter of the sheet number. The letter is only a marker. The tour does not say what a letter stands for.
Sheet titles come from the sheet index on Sheet G-001. Drawings are not matched to spec divisions. Sheets are grouped by their letter and nothing else.
7 groups, 16 sheet pages found, 1 sheet listed but not found.
Group G
1 sheet page found.
- G-001Cover Sheet and Sheet Index
Group A
8 sheet pages found. 1 more sheet is listed but not found.
- A-101First Floor Plan
- A-102Second Floor Plan
- A-201Building Elevations
- A-301Building Sections
- A-501Architectural Details Issue 1. This number also appears in Issue 2. See step 4.
- A-501Architectural Details Issue 2.
- A-601Door and Window Schedules
- A-602Room Finish Schedule
- A-401Stair and Entry Enlargements Listed in the sheet index. No page with this number was found.
Group S
3 sheet pages found.
- S-101Foundation Plan
- S-201Level 2 Framing Plan Not searched: scanned page, no text layer.
- S-501Structural Details Not searched: scanned page, no text layer.
Group M
1 sheet page found.
- M-101First Floor Mechanical Plan
Group P
1 sheet page found.
- P-101First Floor Plumbing Plan
Group E
1 sheet page found.
- E-101First Floor Electrical Plan
Group C
1 sheet page found.
- C-101Site Plan
How to read the groups
- A sheet is addressed as "Sheet A-101". When a number appears in two issues, each page keeps its issue label.
- Sheets S-201 and S-501 are the two scanned sheets named in step 1. They are listed, and a search does not read them.
- Sheet A-401 is named in the sheet index but has no page in the files. The example Index Report lists it for that reason.
Sheets found in your own files, grouped this way, are planned.
Step 4: Version groups
Sheet A-501 appears in two issues of the drawings. The index keeps both pages and lists them together under the one sheet number.
Sheet A-501, Issue 1
File: Drawings, Issue 1 (example). Page 6 of that file.
Text on the page, as printed in the example:
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS | DETAIL 1 WALL INSULATION R-19 BATT | DETAIL 2 1-HR CORRIDOR WALL | SEALANT BOTH SIDES
Sheet A-501, Issue 2
File: Drawings, Issue 2 (example). Page 1 of that file.
Text on the page, as printed in the example:
ARCHITECTURAL DETAILS | ISSUE 2 | DETAIL 1 WALL INSULATION R-21 BATT | DETAIL 2 1-HR CORRIDOR WALL | SEALANT BOTH SIDES
What the index does
- Both issues stay in the index. Neither is dropped and neither is hidden.
- A search reads both pages. The word "insulation" returns Sheet A-501 twice, once for each issue, each with its issue label.
- The example Index Report lists the pair under "Also in this set": "Sheet A-501: Issue 1, Issue 2". Both pages could be read, so it is not listed as unreadable.
What the index does not do
It does not compare the two pages. It does not say which issue governs. In the example, Detail 1 reads R-19 on Issue 1 and R-21 on Issue 2.
You read both pages and make the call. Version groups on your own files are planned.
Step 5: The Index Report
The Index Report lists items that were detected, are still open, and can be acted on. This is the report for the example project.
Example project (fictional)
What we could not read
Not searched: 3 pages
Out of 53 pages.
These pages have no text layer, so a search cannot read them.
- Section 07 92 00, page 3: scanned page, no text layer
- Sheet S-201: scanned page, no text layer
- Sheet S-501: scanned page, no text layer
Listed in the sheet index but not found: 1 sheet
Out of 16 sheet numbers in the sheet index.
The sheet index on Sheet G-001 lists these numbers. No page with the number was found in the set.
- Sheet A-401 (Stair and Entry Enlargements)
Also in this set
Sheet numbers in more than one issue: 1
Out of 15 sheet numbers found.
The same sheet number appears in more than one issue. Each issue is searched and shown with its label.
- Sheet A-501: Issue 1, Issue 2
How to read the report
- Each count says what it is out of: 3 of 53 pages, 1 of 16 sheet numbers, 1 of 15 sheet numbers.
- The 3 pages not searched are the same 3 pages as in the coverage line of step 1.
- Sheet A-401 is named in the sheet index. No page with that number was found. The report does not say why.
- Sheet A-501 sits under its own heading, "Also in this set". Both of its pages could be read, so it is not listed under "What we could not read". Step 4 shows the pair.
What is left off
The report leaves out anything the index handled without trouble. Each entry is an open item.
An Index Report for your own files is planned. The home page shows the example report next to the example search.
Step 6: Search and the coverage line
A search finds your letters anywhere in the page text, in capitals or not. Results are grouped by section or sheet. The coverage line comes with them.
This is the search for "sealant" in the example project. Page text with the letters marked is left out here to keep the picture short.
Example project (fictional)
11 pages contain "sealant", in 9 sections and sheets.
Searched 50 of 53 pages. 3 pages not searched (scanned page, no text layer): Section 07 92 00, page 3; Sheet S-201; Sheet S-501.

Sheet A-501
Sheet A-501 (Issue 1)
In Drawings, Issue 1 (example), file page 6.
Sheet A-501 (Issue 2)
In Drawings, Issue 2 (example), file page 1.
How to read the results
- The 11 pages sit in 9 sections and sheets: 6 sections and 3 sheets. Sheet A-501 appears twice, once for each issue.
- A section address reads "Section 09 91 23, page 2". A sheet address reads "Sheet A-301". The file page is a second way to find the page.
- The coverage line is the same line as in step 1. It names the 3 pages that this search could not read.
A search with no results
This is the answer for "firestopping" in the example project. No page with text contains it. The answer still carries the coverage line.
Example project (fictional)
No page with text contains "firestopping" (50 pages searched).
Searched 50 of 53 pages. 3 pages not searched (scanned page, no text layer): Section 07 92 00, page 3; Sheet S-201; Sheet S-501.
This result does not cover the 3 pages that were not searched.
The answer says what was searched and what was not. It does not say the word is absent from the 3 pages that a search cannot read.
Searching your own files this way is planned. Try the example search with "sealant" or "firestopping".
Step 7: Selecting sections and sheets
Selecting is planned and not live yet. The picture below is fixed. It is not a working screen.
The idea: from the results, you pick the sections and sheets you want to keep. Here 3 are picked. The picture shows 6 of the 9 sections and sheets in the "sealant" results.
Example project (fictional)
Picked from the "sealant" results
- Section 01 33 00Not selected
- Section 07 92 00Not selected
- Section 09 29 00Selected
- Section 09 91 23Selected
- Sheet A-102Not selected
- Sheet A-301Selected
The selection, as a list
3 items.
- Section 09 29 00
- Section 09 91 23
- Sheet A-301
What the list holds
- The list holds section numbers and sheet numbers. It does not hold page numbers.
- A page number can change if a file is read again later. A section or sheet number is the name of the item.
- A sheet number that appears in two issues, like A-501, keeps its issue labels. See step 4.
The list is the input to the export in step 8.
Step 8: Exporting a bookmarked PDF for Bluebeam
Export is planned and not live yet. The picture below is fixed. It is not a working screen.
The idea: the selection from step 7 becomes one PDF. The PDF has one bookmark for each section or sheet in the list.
Example project (fictional)
Export summary
3 items selected. 3 bookmarks. 7 pages in the PDF.
| Bookmark | Item | Pages from the item |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Section 09 29 00 | 3 |
| 2 | Section 09 91 23 | 3 |
| 3 | Sheet A-301 | 1 |
What happens next
- You open the PDF in Bluebeam or in another PDF viewer. The bookmarks lead to the sections and sheets you picked.
- Markup, measurement and takeoff happen in that tool. The app has none of them and does not plan to add them.
- The job in the app ends when the right pages are found and handed over.
That is the end of the tour. The pieces marked planned are not built yet.
